Founded in 1969,
Mitel has grown from providing simple business telephone systems to offering an array of value-driven communications products. An industry-leading provider focused on the communication needs of business enterprises, Mitel employs over 1,900 communications professionals, and services business customers through a network of 59 company-owned, direct sales offices and over 350 authorized providers in North America and 60 resellers in Europe.

When Steven De Korne joined Mitel (previously known as Inter-Tel) as Director of Marketing, one of his first tasks was to find a new company to take over the contracts for the retailer meetings and special events that the comapany hosts every year. “I didn’t like the way they were being handled,” De Korne said. “I was looking for a company that could encompass a lot more than simple event planning, and that could grow with our company, as I knew our conferences were going to grow.”

Reliability was also an issue. “Our previous travel management company once created a proposal to me and they were supposed to send it out by mail, and then I didn’t hear from them for three weeks. When I called to ask what had happened they said it went out, and then it arrived via Fed-Ex the next day, which told me they had forgotten. I knew it was time for us to move on.”

Mitel chose CMI Resources, a company that specializes in group meetings, conferences and travel incentives in both the US and internationally. “I knew Paul before he started CMI, and I had great confidence in his ability,” De Korne said. “When he went out on his own to create CMI, there was no question that we would go with him and become a client.”

Mitel sells its products through a select group of authorized retailers. Every year the company brings these sellers together to introduce their new product line. This annual event includes a trade show, a formal dinner and ongoing conference sessions.

“In the first year that
CMI took over the event we had 112 people in attendance; eight years later, we now have more than 1,000. CMI’s responsibilities have increased and we rely on them more every time,” De Korne said. “ Two years ago they took over registration, and now register all of our attendees for the meeting. CMI also provides support when I need people on site to manage registration and help with show management.”

For the past years,
CMI Resources has also served as our travel company for Mitel’s President’s Club incentive program. “CMI handles the destination selection, airline ticketing, and the coordination of the entire event,” De Korne said. “We know they’ll find us the right hotel, and get us the space we need for each event, and their percentages are half the cost of our previous supplier.”
